Nopalitos in red chili sauce

Nopalitos in red chili sauce is a very easy and affordable Mexican recipe, is typical in center and southern Mexico, but during lent is traditional across the country. Is consider as one of the lent dishes.
Is prepared at morning for brunch or midday for lunch, is served at main dish alone or with refried beans and/or egg. In some places is served as snack with totopos. The kind of red chili vary, some recipes only use one chili and others two or more. Do not forget corn tortillas and enjoy. This dish is one of the most prepared dishes in Mexican homes.

  • 1 Lb Nopal, diced
  • 1/4 Onion, sliced
  • 1 Tomato
  • 8 Cascabel chili, dry
  • 4 Tree chili, dry
  • 1 Clove of garlic
  • A pinch of Oregano
  • Salt to taste


  1. In a pot add nopalitos, cover with water and simmer for 5 minutes, then wash and remove the gooey . In the griddle or iron pan roast tomato. Meanwhile in the same pot or in other add chilies and bring to boil, then simmer until they are cooked. After this incorporate in blender, chilies, onion, garlic, tomato peeled and salt to taste, liquify.

  2. In a saucepan saute the sauce and then add nopalitos, add oregano and cook for 5 minutes.
  3. Remove from heat and serve.
